Bus Tour Guidelines

Flow Chart Steps for a Basic Bus Tour

1. Tour guide and other representative (Bus Driver) of the company should be present at the pick up location at least 45 minutes before commencement of the tour. Note the ABC&CO personnel should wear proper attire.

2. The tour bus should be parked at an agreed location with the leader of the group arranging the tour.

3. The Driver and the Tour Guide should stand outside the bus in order to greet the members of the tour.

4. Only passengers on the “passenger data sheet” should be allowed to alight the bus.

5. Introduction of self and other ABC&CO tour guides should be done.

6. Once passengers are on the bus safety instructions should be given:

"ABC&CO is committed to the safety and comfort of all our passengers on our tours, it is with this in mind that we know ask you to abide by the following safety instructions:

  • While on the bus remain seated at all times
  • Keep your heads and hands inside the bus at all times
  • Do not disembark until told to do so
  • Remain with the group at all times
  • “Look but do not touch” unless instructed otherwise.
  • If you need any assistance please raise your hand and our guide will assist you".

7. Once the journey has begun, allow passengers to get settled on the bus. You may then begin to deliver your commentary of this particular tour (remember to keep in mind the distance of the journey and tailor you commentary to fit into this time frame).

8. On the journey point out areas of interest along the way.

9. A brief description of the destination should also be given before arrival

10. On arrival at the destination the bus should then park in the agreed parking area as agreed with the personnel of the facilities.

11. The guide will then give instructions to the passengers as to where they should assemble after alighting from the bus.

The guide will alight from the bus first and lead the passengers to the assemble area. If the ABC&CO tour guide is the one giving the tour they will then proceed with the tour using the research information provided by ABC&CO. (This information should be the same for every tour guide in order to ensure that each tour delivers the same information to the passengers, even though the delivery may vary according to guides.). If the tour is to be given by guides assigned to the location then: the ABC&CO Guide proceeds to give the following instructions.

A. “The tour will be …. minutes long and will be conducted by the …...

B. Introduce the site guide to the group.

C. Turn the group over to this guide

12. At the end of the tour of the unit, thank the Guide. Make sure all the members of the group are accounted for by doing another head count once on the bus. Repeat safety instructions once again

13. If the tour includes more than one destination, inform the group of the next stop and the approximate time of arrival give them a some description of the destination. Again the bus should be park at the agreed location. (Step 11 should be repeated)

14. If lunch was apart of the agreed package, the tour guide will inform the group of the place and allotted time for lunch

The guide alights first from the bus and then waits for the group to alight the bus. The guide then leads the group to the designated lunch area and makes sure all are comfortable for lunch.

15. Tour ends. The guide leads the group back to the bus.

16. The bus driver should be seated in the bus, waiting on the passengers. The guide stands at the entrance of the bus and does a preliminary check to make sure that all members of the group are accounted for. Once every one is seated on the bus a final head count is made. Safety instructions are given again. The journey back to the termination point will be ---- minutes

17. After 5 minutes of the journey has elapsed the Guide can indulge in a casual conversation with the group. He/she can ask them what they thought of the tour and also inform them of other educational tours that ABC&CO has to offer.

18. During the final 5 minutes of the journey the guide thanks Participants for using ABC&CO:

"I would like to thank you for choosing ABC&CO. I hope you had a great time and trust that you learnt a little more about (insert attraction/destination). We hope you will use the services of ABC&CO for your next exciting tour of another great (insert name of country, state, city, etc) attraction, site, location.

19. The bus then arrives at the termination point the tour guide gets off the bus first. The guide then stands at the door and sees to it that every one gets off safely and bids them good-bye. The driver makes a final check of the bus to make sure no ones belongings were left behind.
