DO YOU THINK GEORGE BUSH WILL MAKE A COMEBACK?

I wrote a Blog piece recently suggesting that President George Bush would make a comeback before the end of his term in office. This is the article. I posted on Helium.com to see how the piece would fare.

Let's just say that there was overwhelming disagreement with my position. So much so, I have decided to do a Poll.

Here is my summarised take:

George Bush and the Republican Administration, without question, have some very challenging times ahead. The President's approval rating is way down and I don't think anyone could imagine the situation in Iraq being any worse.

However, I believe good leadership is about moments of crisis and the effectiveness of response. In this regard, no one, in my opinion, can question the effectiveness of the response and the quality of the leadership of George Bush and the Administration just after 9/11.

The big question today, however, has to do with how effectively the ongoing crisis, especially in Iraq, is being managed? I do believe, despite the “lame duck” status of Mr. Bush's Presidency and Democratic control of both Houses, that there is enough time left to implement meaningful strategies and for the Presidency to make a comeback.

Also, let us not forget the hate-filled terrorists who are plotting and scheming with great determination to heighten this crisis unlike we could ever imagine. George Bush and the Republicans demonstrated great resolve after 9/11 and despite the current unease, I don't think the world would expect any less should the unthinkable happen again.

I am a Bush fan and I absolutely agree that he showed great leadership right after 911. Partisan politics has a tendency to dim memories when one's political agenda is at stake. Sadly, I do not foresee a
Bush comeback (unless the unthinkable should happen again and even then with the Democrats being in control of both houses he would be unable to respond to any major crisis withouttheir interference). Mr. Bush's legacy will be the unfortunate of mistake of going into Iraq and not finding weapons of mass destruction. I hasten to add that the same intelligence that he was expected to use to thwart the 911 attack is the same intelligence he relied on when they decided to go into Iraq.

I get the feeling that the Republicans have thrown in the towel where Iraq is concerned and any opportunity to turn this bad situation around will be missed. Let's see what the Democrats have planned for Iraq. Bush did not have an exit strategy. I wonder if they do?

Unfortunately, there is no 2nd coming on the horizon for Mr. Bush.

The odds are very much against Mr. Bush and the Republicans but there are things happening right now that we should not underestimate.

If the deal with North Korea can be finalised that would be a tremendous victory but more importantly the US is now initiating talks on Iraq and has decided to include Syria and Iran - something that would have been unthinkable just a few months ago. Success here would be monumental and could pave the way for further talks and peace in the Middle East.

The comeback imho is very possible...it's just whether obvious biases will prevail or if the world will be kind enough to attribute significant political successes on the international front to the very embattled President.

BW...seems very unlikely after all with all the scandals, high level departures, election fever, etc. Seems a waltz into the sunset and possibly into oblivion will be more like it...but never say never!!!
