2007 ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP: IT’S ALMOST GAME TIME
The preparation is almost complete. 16 teams are on their way to “paradise” to compete over two months…well, 47 days at 9 venues for the most prestigious prize in cricket – the long awaited ICC Cricket World Cup 2007.
Those who have been to cricket in the West Indies will know that, although the official ceremony is scheduled for March 5, the party would have started a long time ago. As one TV promo puts it, it will be 47 days of hot cricket action and 47 nights of ‘jammin’ Caribbean parties’.
The video below is an excellent preview of all the teams participating in the competition.
Also, for those of us keen on cricket facts and stats, here are a few that are worthwhile remembering:
- Australia is the current champion and has won the competition four times. The champions have also distinguished themselves by having the most consecutive wins (12 from 1991 – 2003) and the highest winning margin (256 against Namibia).
- Three Players hold the distinction of scoring the most hundreds. They are Sourav Ganguly, Mark Waugh, Sachin Tendulkar with 4 centuries each. Sachin with 1,732 runs has been the most prolific scorer.
- England hosted the first tournament which was won by the West Indies who beat Australia in the final. West Indies also won the second tournament and only lost out to India in the 1983 final.
- Pakistan’s Wasim Akram has taken the most wickets (55) and Imran Khan with 19.26 runs allowed per 1,000 balls is the most economical bowler.
