2007 CRICKET WORLD CUP...JUST HOW BAD?

aussiesupporters.jpgI borrowed this from a post by Paul Kapustka on Gigaom's NewTeeVee: "My early betting line says the 2008 Olympics in Beijing could and should be the biggest-ever Internet-viewed sporting event (for American audiences), simply because most of the action will take place at hours not synchronized to prime time".

My comment: "…even though cricket is a different animal…it’s really disappointing to see that the organisers (and other powers ) could not do more to make the 2007 Cricket World Cup available on the Net".

It seems late to be establishing a wish list for the world cup now in progress; but when you consider the many disappointments and unfortunate events so far, you can't help but focus on one more negative and just how much of a monumental failure the event that was meant to showcase the Caribbean might be. It's no secret...we are entering the semi-final stage of the competition; and unless there is a drastic turnaround, particularly in the crowd support, many will rue for years the decision to take cricket's most prestigious event to "paradise".

Out of all the disappointment, though, some fans are having the time of their lives. Australian supporters, in particular, are ecstatic and why not? When your team plays the punishing brand of cricket that the Aussies have played and dispatch mediocre competition like they have...who wouldn't be happy?

With the Aussies in ominous form you would think all Australians would be glued to their radios and TV sets but not my colleague Crazy Aussie Bastard. He is is obviously too busy carving a super blog by the same name - Crazy Aussie Bastard - to care much about what is happening in the West Indies. I was tempted to prepare a detailed summary of what has transpired from the first ball but I am also busy working on my own super blog.

In all seriousness though...I had a chance to travel to the Caribbean where all the games are available free on TV; but it's a real shame that we all are not able to indulge, more than likely because the organisers did not have the vision Paul Kapustka highlighted in his post on NewTeeVee. With the Australians and other teams affected by time zones, it's really unforgivable that people like Crazy Aussie Bastard are unable to follow the ball-by-ball progress of their teams.

Enough of criticising the 2007 Cricket World Cup though. Let's hope for excellent sunshine and more of the Australian brand of cricket that will hopefully erase some of the bad memories and make cricket fans the world over as proud as ever, even if commitments or "circumstances" make it impossible to live the journey of one very lucky team.
